Holmgren in-home family Session

A couple of years ago, I showed up to an in-home family photography session here in Cache Valley, Utah, feeling a little nervous. This was one of the first times I'd photographed such a big family in their own home. And while I'd photographed plenty of families before, bringing a newborn, little kids, AND teenagers together in one lifestyle family session was going to be a new experience for me. But it ended up being one of those sessions that reminded me exactly why I love in-home family photography so much.

What Do You Want to Remember About Your Family Right Now?

This is one of my FAVORITE questions to ask parents before an in-home family photography session. Not what poses they want. Not what Pinterest pictures they're hoping to recreate. But what do you want to remember about your life right now? This mom told me about the things her family loved doing together. Reading books. Playing outside on the swing set. Listening to music. Just being home together. So instead of planning a bunch of poses, we planned their lifestyle family photography session around the things that already made their family who they were. And that's really the goal of an in-home family session. To capture your family in a way that feels like YOUR family.

An At-Home Newborn Photography Session That Was About the Whole Family

Technically, this was a newborn photography session. But when you're bringing a new baby home, there's SO much more happening than just having a baby. There are siblings learning what life looks like with another little person around. Older kids growing up. Parents trying to soak it all in. And a family figuring out this new chapter together. That's one of my favorite things about lifestyle newborn photography. We get to capture the baby AND the family they're becoming part of. For this particular Cache Valley newborn session, that meant starting with everyone piled onto the couch. And then we just let the family be themselves. No complicated posing. No pressure to make everything look perfect. Just genuine interactions, little moments, and the relationships that make this family special.

Yes, In-Home Family Photos Work With Teenagers, Too!

One thing I remember about this session was that Mom seemed a little nervous about how her teenage sons would do.

And I GET IT. When most people imagine family photos at home, they picture a young couple with a newborn or toddlers jumping on the bed. But in-home family photography isn't just for families with little kids. It's for teenagers, too. And big families. And families whose kids are getting ready to leave home. In fact, I think those years are some of the most important to document. Because when you're working with an in-home family photographer, you don't have to ask everyone to stand in one spot and smile at the camera the entire time. We can give people something to do. We can play music, hang out in the living room, head into the backyard, or simply let everyone interact the way they normally would. And by the end of this session, we had some really beautiful images of everyone. Not just the newborn. We captured sibling relationships, individual personalities, and the way this family came together during such a special season of life.

What Does an In-Home Family Photography Session Actually Look Like?

If you're considering booking an in-home family photographer in Logan, Cache Valley, or anywhere in Northern Utah, you might be wondering what we actually DO during one of these sessions. And the answer is that it depends on your family! Before your session, I want to know what life looks like at your house. Do you have kids who love building forts? A toddler who insists on reading the same book seventeen times? A family that spends every evening in the backyard? Maybe it's making pancakes together, playing the piano, snuggling on the couch, or hanging out in the kitchen. Those are the things I want to photograph. We'll make time for some more traditional family portraits, too, because I know how important it is to have a photograph of everyone together. But I also want to give your family room to move, play, laugh, and just EXIST together. Especially with a full family photography session, we have the opportunity to photograph different combinations of people, the relationships between siblings, and those little interactions that can be easy to overlook.

Do You Need a Perfect House for In-Home Family Photos?

NOPE. And I wish I could convince every mom in Cache Valley of this. Your house does not need to look like it belongs in a magazine for us to take beautiful photos there. I don't care if your furniture doesn't match. I don't care if the kids' bedrooms aren't perfectly decorated. And I certainly don't expect you to spend three days deep-cleaning before I show up. We'll find the spaces that work best for photos and make adjustments where we need to. But remember, your home isn't just the backdrop. It's part of the story. The couch your kids piled onto. The backyard swing set. The room where everyone gathers to listen to music. Those things might not seem particularly special right now because you see them every single day. But someday? I have a feeling they'll mean a whole lot more. And THAT is why I love in-home family photography.
